Porzig named graduate
student affairs associate dean
BY JOYCE THOMAS
Ellen F. Porzig, PhD,
associate professor of developmental biology and of
molecular pharmacology, has been appointed associate dean
for graduate student affairs, effective this month,
announced Eugene A. Bauer, MD, vice president for
Stanford University Medical Center and Medical School
dean. Porzig replaces Carl Rhodes, PhD, who served from
September 1996 as associate dean for graduate education
and whose many responsibilities included coordinating and
overseeing Stanford's combined admissions program.
"I am delighted that
Dr. Porzig, who has been honored with several teaching
awards, agreed to serve this important educational role
for the School of Medicine," said Bauer.
Porzig, recipient of a
doctorate in biological sciences (cellular and
developmental biology) from Stanford University in 1977,
joined the School of Medicine in 1979 as a research
associate in the Department of Medicine (oncology
division). In 1980 she began teaching at the University
in biological sciences and with the Program in Human
Biology. In 1998 she achieved the rank of associate
professor and continued teaching in the departments of
developmental biology and molecular pharmacology at the
School of Medicine.
Porzig's many academic
teaching honors include the Walter J. Gores Award for
Excellence in Teaching and the Kaiser Award for
Excellence in Preclinical Teaching, which she received at
the School of Medicine's convocation ceremony in June. In
addition, she has a long track record of scientific
research and teaching at Stanford, working with many
departments at both the University and the Medical
School. SR
