Conference on managing set for Nov. 10

Employees who manage people, project teams or programs at Stanford are invited to register for an all-day conference to be held on Monday, Nov. 10, at the Arrillaga Alumni Center. The event will start off with several speakers in the morning and feature more than a dozen workshops throughout the day that focus on various aspects of professional development.

The conference will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a welcome by Randy Livingston, Stanford's vice president of business affairs and chief financial officer, followed by a talk by David Demarest, vice president for public affairs, titled "Your Role in the University Makes a World of Difference."

After a short break, Frank Flynn, associate professor of organizational behavior at the Graduate School of Business, will deliver the keynote address, "Creating a Culture of Collaboration." His speech is intended to set the tone for the rest of the conference, which organizers have designed to address an increasingly complex work environment as the campus grows and interdisciplinary efforts become more common.

After the opening remarks, attendees can then take part in one of five morning workshops that will be held simultaneously. Two more sets of five concurrent sessions are scheduled for that afternoon. The sessions include "Thinking Strategically: What's Ahead for Stanford and Higher Education," "Tackling Challenging Conversations" and "Teamwork Tango: How to Lead and When to Follow."

Registration is limited to 250 spots, and the cost is $200. Stanford Training Assistance Program (STAP) or department funds may be used. Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m., and the last set of sessions ends at 4:30 p.m. Registration includes breakfast and a buffet lunch.
