Bechtel International Center's weeklong celebration started on Saturday, but there's still plenty to check out. The festivities are part of Bechtel's annual International Week, and events scheduled through Sunday at the Capistrano Way center are sure to suit a wide range of interests—from an evening discussion about the dangers of landmines leftover after wars around the world to a night of Canadian films, Filipino food and dance performances and, on Saturday, a multinational barbecue party bringing together the outdoor cuisines of Argentina, Turkey, Mexico, Germany and France. The party will go from 6:30 to 11:30 p.m. and feature salsa music, Middle Eastern hits and even Euro-electronica. Admission is free, and a Stanford ID is required. For a complete schedule, visit http://www.stanford.edu/dept/icenter/iweek/.
A good stretch, tai chi and a smoothie are all to be had, for free, this Friday. It's YogaPalooza, which organizers hope will be the largest yoga class on campus. Sponsored by BeWell@Stanford, the event also will have "balanced living resources" on hand, starting at 3:30 p.m., followed by the yoga class from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Arrillaga Center for Sports and Recreation. No exercise mat or RSVP is needed, although you can announce (by click) that you'll be attending by going to http://stanford.wellsphere.com.
The entire campus also is invited to a concert on Saturday featuring acclaimed gospel singer ANNDRETTA LYLE. Currently a student at Stanford, Lyle has been a performer on stage and television and in the music industry since she was 12. The Oakland native will be joined by guest choirs—including the Stanford Gospel Ensemble—and a live audio recording will be made. The concert is open to the public as well and begins at 7 p.m. in Dinkelspiel Auditorium, with doors opening at 6 p.m. Sponsors include the Committee on Black Performing Arts and the Music Department. To buy tickets ($10 students; $20/$10 preferred/general admission), visit http://blackstagestanford.com.
As summer approaches, so will the bulldozers, and staff members in offices within the Serra complex have been packing up and moving out to make way for construction of a new Business School. One of those offices, Faculty Staff Housing, is now open in its new location, in the Owen House at 552 Lane A, and at ID Mail code 8630. The phone and fax numbers remain the same: 725-6893 (phone) and 725-4888 (fax).
