Faculty Senate to hear report on NCAA athletic certification process

The Faculty Senate will convene Thursday for its fourth meeting of the winter quarter.

The senate is scheduled to hear a report from LaDoris Cordell, chair of the university's NCAA Athletic Certification Steering Committee, about the study Stanford has conducted over the past year of its athletics programs. The self-evaluation is a required part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's certification program for Division I schools.

The purpose of the certification process is to ensure the integrity of a school's athletics programs and is required every 10 years. Stanford completed its first certification self-evaluation study in 1998. Its next report is due to the NCAA by May 1.

The senate also will hear a recommendation from the Committee on Graduate Studies to grant degree-nominating authority for master's and doctoral degrees to the new Department of Environmental Earth System Science in the School of Earth Sciences.

The senate will meet at 3:15 p.m. in Room 180 of the Law School. Discussion is limited to members of the senate, but members of the Stanford community may request to attend the meeting by contacting the Academic Secretary's Office at 723-4992 or Trish Del Pozzo at delpozzo@stanford.edu.

The senate will adjourn at 4:30 p.m. for an executive session in the Law School Lounge on the ground floor of the building.
