Aijaz Ahmed, MD, has been promoted to associate professor of medicine and associate medical director of the adult liver transplant program. His research interests include viral hepatitis and liver transplantation. He has developed clinical expertise in optimizing antiviral therapy in patients with chronic hepatitis C prior to and following liver transplantation.
James Chang MD, professor and chief of plastic and reconstructive surgery, has been appointed research director for the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. In this national leadership position, Chang will direct the multi- million dollar research funding portfolio of the ASSH. His responsibilities are to provide grants and mentoring to young investigators, to partner with the National Institutes of Health for new funding opportunities, and to develop prospective multicenter trials for clinical outcomes related to hand and upper extremity problems.
John Huguenard, PhD, professor of neurology and neurological sciences and, by courtesy, of molecular and cellular physiology, is the recipient of the American Epilepsy Society Epilepsy Research Recognition Award for basic science. The award is given annually to outstanding active scientists and clinicians working in epilepsy research. Huguenard's research involves the cellular, physiological and molecular mechanisms underlying neuronal rhythmicity and the origin of epilepsy. Huguenard also serves as director of the neuroscience graduate program.
Paul Maggio, MD, has been appointed assistant professor of surgery, as of Dec. 1. Prior to joining the Stanford faculty, he trained in trauma/burn and surgical critical care at the University of Michigan, where he also received an MBA. Maggio's current research focuses on health-care economics and surgical outcomes, particularly in respect to trauma systems and critical care medicine.
