Faculty Senate to meet Thursday; presentation of several reports set
The Faculty Senate will convene Thursday for its second meeting of the spring quarter.
The senate is scheduled to hear presentations by Patricia Jones, vice provost for faculty development and diversity, on three reports: "Professorial Gains, Losses and Composition," "Status of Women Faculty" and "Factors Affecting Faculty Recruitment and Retention."
The senate also is scheduled to hear a report from Ann Arvin, vice provost and dean of research, and Stephen Monismith, chair of the Committee on Research, on the Army High-Performance Computing Research Center.
Last April, Stanford announced that the U.S. Army had awarded a $105 million, five-year grant to a multi-institution consortium led by Stanford University to establish a new site for the Army High-Performance Computing Research Center at the NASA Ames Research Center at Moffett Field.
Five dozen members of the faculty later signed a letter expressing concern over the grant "both because of its enormous size ($105 million over five years, with the likelihood of renewal for another five years) and because its terms seem to suggest an unusually high level of collaboration and coordination with the military."
The letter, which was published last June in the Stanford Daily, was submitted to the senate, which referred questions about the propriety of the grant to the Committee on Research.
Bernard Roth, a professor of mechanical engineering and a leader of the faculty members who signed the letter, also will address the senate.
The meeting will take place in Room 180 at the School of Law. Discussion is limited to members of the senate, but members of the Stanford community may request to attend the meeting by contacting Trish Del Pozzo in the Academic Secretary's Office at 723-4992 or delpozzo@stanford.edu.
