Prospective freshmen, parents to visit campus this week

More than 1,000 prospective freshmen and their parents will visit Stanford during Admit Weekend, being held this year from Thursday, April 24, through Saturday, April 26. Presented annually by the Office of Undergraduate Admission, the weekend introduces admitted students to Stanford's resources and programs by highlighting academic, residential, extracurricular and social opportunities on and off campus.

Admitted students—otherwise known as ProFros—are housed, as guests, in student residences and are welcomed to Stanford's community by student volunteer hosts, who facilitate an enthusiastic and vibrant atmosphere throughout the weekend.

Programs designed for the students and their parents include tours, a question-and-answer session with President John Hennessy and a wide selection of seminars, panels and hands-on demonstrations led by faculty that prospective students can attend in order to find out what classes are like at Stanford.

Activities exclusively for students will include a picnic and parties hosted by the dormitories and theme houses. For parents, an extensive array of open houses, panel discussions and welcome events will be offered. The university also will shuttle parents around Palo Alto for dining, shopping and entertainment, in partnership with the City of Palo Alto and the local business community.

Other events for admits and parents will showcase the university's many resources—academic, cultural, medical, religious, recreational and social. And throughout the weekend, activities will allow admit families to meet current students and their parents, as well as top administrators.

Provost John Etchemendy and Dean of Admission and Financial Aid Richard Shaw will greet the "Admitted Class of 2012" at an official welcome on Thursday afternoon. Prospective students have until May 1 to decide whether to accept Stanford's offer of admission.
