Trustees advance new building plans

The Stanford University Board of Trustees recently approved preliminary plans to add a second building to the East Campus Child Care Center near Escondido Village.

At its April 7-8 meeting, trustees gave concept and site approval—the first step in the process—to a new $5.4 million building for 100 children ages 8 weeks to 5 years old.

Trustees also gave design approval to proposals to build a practice gymnasium next to Maples Pavilion, faculty homes on Stanford Avenue and rental housing on Olmsted Road.

In addition, the board gave project approval to plans to transform the Track House Sport Shop into a visitor information center and expand the north and south track bleachers. Trustees also gave construction approval for a new $32 million building for the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research, to be known as the John A. and Cynthia Fry Gunn Building.

Childcare center

When the second building is completed, the East Campus Child Care Center, developed exclusively for Stanford faculty, students, postdoctoral scholars and staff, will accommodate 200 children.

The first building is expected to open in the autumn of 2008. Based on the proposed schedule of approvals, the second building will be completed in the autumn of 2009.

The second building, like the first, will be a two-story, residential-style facility.

The East Campus Child Care Center, now under construction on Olmsted Road, will be the fourth full-time children's center serving the university community. Currently, 378 children are enrolled at the three existing centers. About 700 families are on waiting lists for childcare.

The second building for the East Campus Child Care Center is expected to return to the board for design approval in June, and for project and construction approval in December.

Practice gymnasium

The new practice gym will be located next to Maples Pavilion to take full advantage of its lockers, showers and rest rooms. It will provide two courts for basketball and volleyball programs for team and recreational use. It also will provide space for varsity weight training, which will be relocated to the new practice gym from 340 Bonair Siding.

The $14.8 million project is expected to return to trustees for project and construction approval in June. The gym is expected to be completed in March 2009.

Faculty homes and staff rentals

Trustees approved the addition of two more single-family detached houses to the Stanford Avenue Faculty Homes project, bringing the total number of proposed homes to 39.

Overall, the total estimated cost of the project rose $200,000 to $33.4 million.

The proposal is expected to return to the board for project approval in December and construction approval in April 2009.

Based on the anticipated schedule of reviews, the first homes would be available in September 2010, and the project would be complete by September 2011.

Trustees also approved revisions to the Olmsted Road Staff Rental Housing project that reduced the size and number of townhouse-style homes. Revised plans call for 22 three-bedroom homes, ranging in size from 1,550 to 1,870 square feet. Original plans called for 29 homes, including 20 four-bedroom units, ranging in size from 2,030 to 2,420 square feet.

As a result, the overall cost of the project dropped to $14.3 million from $26.8 million.

The project is expected to return to the board for project approval in June and construction approval in October. It is expected to be finished in July 2009.

Visitor center and track bleachers

At its recent meeting, the board gave project approval to revised plans to create a new visitor information center and to expand the north and south track bleachers. As a result of the changes, the total estimated cost of the project dropped to $6.7 million from $7.5 million.

Under the proposal, the Track House will be remodeled as a visitor information center after the bleacher expansion project is completed.

The project is expected to return to trustees for construction approval in June. The new center is expected to open in January 2009.
