Fourteen students, six groups honored with university awards

The new Dean of Students Citizen Award, which recognizes students who exemplify the university's commitment to ethical principles, was presented to two students at a May 16 ceremony. At the same event, 12 students received the James W. Lyons Awards for Service. One student group also won the Legacy Award, and five others won Dean of Students Outstanding Achievement Awards.

Dean of Students Citizen Awards

Jenny Allen, who earned a law degree this year, was honored for writing for the Stanford Daily, serving as co-chair and chair of the Graduate Student Council and leading tours of campus. Marcelo Worsley, a senior majoring in chemical engineering and Spanish who also is pursuing a master's degree in education, was recognized for teaching engineering in an afterschool program for high school sophomores, creating a group called Teen Technology Tutoring and serving on the Haas Center's Public Service Student Advisory Board.

James W. Lyons Awards for Service

Twelve students received the James W. Lyons Awards for Service, which is given to students who have demonstrated exemplary service to the greater Stanford community.

The recipients were Cullen Buie, a doctoral student in mechanical engineering, who was honored for helping create and chair the Graduate Student Council Diversity Committee and for working to increase the number of underrepresented minorities in Stanford's graduate student population; Nicholas Cheng, a senior majoring in comparative studies in race and ethnicity, and Victoria Kauer, a junior majoring in American studies, who were jointly honored for motivating more than 900 students to participate in a year-long service event that raised $150,000 for Partners in Health, a nonprofit health care organization; Ian Chua, a student in the School of Medicine, who was honored for his involvement with the Pacific Free Clinic in San Jose, a clinic for low-income patients run by Stanford students; Joseph Lopez, a senior majoring in human biology, who was honored for his role as lead organizer of the statewide Dia de los Muertos Premedical Conference, an annual event for minority pre-med students, and for his involvement in Barrio Assistance, a mentoring and tutoring program for Spanish-speaking students in East Palo Alto; Pijush Paul, a doctoral students in geophysics, and Agram Piyush Shanker, a doctoral student in electrical engineering, who were jointly honored for planning and facilitating the 2007 International Gala, a celebration of international culture; Tammy Phan, a senior majoring in human biology, who was honored for her contributions to the Stanford Asian American community, including diversifying the programming of the Stanford Vietnamese Student Association; Maria L. Spletter, a doctoral student in biological sciences, who was honored for creating a conference for graduate women in science and engineering and for leading the Science and Engineering Women's Association; Elissa Test, a senior majoring in English, who was honored for co-founding Students Taking Action Now: Darfur (STAND) and for her work with Camp Kesem, Quest, Hillel and other community service groups; JillianWong, a junior majoring in human biology, who was honored for her work raising awareness of sexual violence, including leading Sigma Psi Zeta, a sorority working to combat violence against women, and serving on the university's Sexual Violence Advisory Board; and Aaron Zagory, a junior majoring in philosophy, who was honored for his involvement in Night Outreach to the Homeless, a student group, and for teaching student-initiated classes and leading alternative spring break trips.

Legacy Award

The Stanford Project on Hunger received the Legacy Award, which recognizes student groups that have demonstrated exemplary service to the greater Stanford community. Also known as SPOON, the 20-year-old student group was honored for recovering prepared and perishable food from campus eateries and distributing it to nearby communities, as well as for educating the campus community about hunger through fundraisers, conferences, fasts and speaker events.

Dean of Students Outstanding Achievement Awards

This award recognizes registered student groups that have enriched the quality of life on campus.

The recipients are the Black Student Union, which was honored for its sponsorship of large-scale events, including a Kwanzaa celebration, a high school conference and the State of the Black Union event, which brought together students and administrators; the Stanford chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, which was honored for sustained and collaborative efforts to educate the campus about racial prejudice and educational, economic, social and political inequalities; Stanford Dance Marathon, which was honored for raising AIDS awareness by developing one of the largest and most energetic community service projects and raising more than $150,000 for Partners in Health; Stanford Women in Business, which was honored for developing strong programs in partnership with students, faculty, staff, alumni and other student groups; and the Student Organizing Committee for the Arts, which was honored for promoting an array of student artistic opportunities that strengthened the arts at Stanford.
