Alumni applications now sought to fill seats on the Board of Trustees in 2008
Applications are now being accepted for alumni who would like to join Stanford's Board of Trustees, the university's governing board, which administers invested funds, sets the annual budget and determines policies for operation and control of the university.
The first round in the selection process requires applicants to fill out an initial application, which can be downloaded from the Stanford Alumni Association's website at http://www.stanfordalumni.org/trustee/. The form asks for information typically found on a resume, as well as a 250-word essay describing why the applicant is interested in the unpaid position.
The deadline for submitting initial applications is 5 p.m. April 15.
The Alumni Committee on Trustee Nominations, a nine-member committee overseeing the nomination and application process, encourages people of all ages and backgrounds to apply. Four alumni trustees will be identified in this selection cycle.
"Stanford alumni who are deeply committed to the university, truly interested in university affairs and prepared to make Stanford the primary recipient of their philanthropic commitment" should apply, the committee said.
The Board of Trustees, which meets five times each academic year, also may be called into special session, and board committees or subcommittees occasionally meet at other times.
In a typical year, the trustees discuss a variety of issues, including strategic allocation of resources, land use, housing and other facility planning; the academic program; regulatory responsibilities; federal and public support of education; community relations; minority affairs; audit and financial controls; and fund-raising planning.
Qualified applicants will be asked to submit an expanded application between June 1 and Aug. 1. Current plans call for trustee selections to be announced in December. The five-year terms begin March 1, 2008.
