Honors & Awards
W. GARY ERNST, the Benjamin M. Page Professor in Earth Sciences, Emeritus, has been honored with a new book on plate tectonics published by the Geological Society of America. Titled Convergent Margin Terranes and Associated Regions: A Tribute to W. G. Ernst, the 273-page volume consists primarily of papers presented at the 2003 annual meeting of the society during a special session on petrology and plate tectonics in honor of Ernst. The book was compiled by five co-editors, including JUHN G. LIOU, professor emeritus of geological and environmental sciences. "The papers in this volume, like the session that inspired it, reflect the diverse interests and prodigious publications of Gary Ernst," said co-editor Mark Cloos, professor of geological sciences at the University of Texas-Austin. "They are a fitting tribute to an outstanding scientist who has enriched the lives of thousands of students." Ernst served on the faculty of the Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences from 1989 to 2004, the year he received Penrose Medal of the Geological Society of America for eminent research in pure geology.
STEPHEN SCHNEIDER, the Melvin and Joan Lane Professor for Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies, is one of nine Bay Area individuals, organizations and businesses to receive a 2007 Clean Air Award from Breathe California, a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting lung health. Schneider, who is co-director of the Center for Environmental Science and Policy and senior fellow at the Woods Institute for the Environment, was recognized for exemplary leadership in fighting global warming, which "can pose serious health risks for all individuals, especially the 750,000 Bay Area residents suffering from a form of lung disease," according to a Breathe California press release. The other award recipients are Nadine Alexis Weil of heartofgreen.org, Tom Dowling of the Electric Auto Association, Sustainable Silicon Valley, Santa Clara Valley Water District, Sustainable Agriculture Education, CONCO Cement Co., San Francisco International Airport and Synergy EV Inc.
