2007 IN REVIEW: Medicine built new foundations for advances of the future

Ever aware of the urgent need to tame disease and prevent illness, the medical school broke ground in multiple ways in the past year. Advances in medical imaging promised a payoff not only in diagnosis and treatments for patients, but also for illuminating pathways for researchers to take in fundamental work. Funding for stem cell research finally took off, with California's stem cell institute getting under way in grant-making, and the School of Medicine assembling new teams of researchers poised to make headway in generating stem cell lines. The medical school also extended its global reach with partnerships in research, training and health-care projects starting in India, China and elsewhere. Closer to home, the school undertook a renewal and rebuilding process that won generous financial support from donors committed to the school's future. On a parallel track, the medical center began negotiations with the City of Palo Alto for approval to rebuild and expand facilities for state-of-the-art hospitals.
