Nominations sought for dean of research, vice provost for graduate education

BY RAY DELGADO

Provost John Etchemendy has appointed a committee to seek candidates for the soon-to-be-vacated position of vice provost and dean of research and the newly created position of vice provost for graduate education.

Chaired by applied physics Professor Malcolm Beasley, the committee has issued a call for faculty nominations.

In an e-mail to faculty, Beasley asked that special consideration be given to candidates who are women or members of ethnic minorities and that nominations explain why a nominee would be an ideal candidate. He also welcomed input on what criteria and qualifications should be considered for the searches, as well as what critical issues those who fill the positions might face.

Arthur Bienenstock, the current vice provost and dean of research, announced recently that he would step down from the position after three years to fill the new position of special assistant to the president for federal research policy. The Office of the Vice Provost and Dean of Research supports the research enterprise at the university. The vice provost is responsible for research policy promulgation and oversight; representation of Stanford and its research interests to internal and external constituencies; and oversight of the programs of the independent laboratories, centers and institutes.

President John Hennessy announced in February the creation of the vice provost for graduate education position, a key recommendation contained in last year's report of the Commission on Graduate Education. The Office of the Vice Provost for Graduate Education will be responsible for the recommendation and promulgation of policies that apply to graduate and postdoctoral study; oversight of recruitment for a diverse graduate student population; and oversight of new programs and initiatives that support graduate education at Stanford.

Nominations are requested by Friday, April 14, and may be submitted to the Dean of Research Search Committee, c/o Provost's Office, mail code 2061. Electronic nominations may also be submitted to Vice Provost for Academic Affairs Stephanie Kalfayan, deputy chair of the search committee, at kalfayan@stanford.edu. All nominations to the committee are confidential.

Questions can be directed to any member of the search committee: Malcolm Beasley; Stephanie Kalfayan; Jenny Allen, student, Law School; Jonathan Dorfan, Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC); Morris Fiorina, Political Science and Hoover Institution; Stephan Graham, Geological and Environmental Sciences; Roni Holeton, Dean's Office, School of Humanities and Sciences; Steven Kahn, Physics and SLAC; Pam Karlan, Law School; Roberta Katz, President's Office; Thomas Kenney, Mechanical Engineering; James Leckie, Civil and Environmental Engineering; James Patell, Graduate School of Business; Sohini Ramachandran, graduate student, Biological Sciences; and Hannah Valantine, Cardiovascular Medicine and Dean's Office, School of Medicine.
