Office for Religious Life encourages community to support relief efforts

The following is a statement from the deans and staff at the Office for Religious Life:

Dear Stanford Community,

The Deans and Staff in the Office for Religious Life are providing the Stanford community a central location and opportunity to support the relief effort on the Gulf Coast by encouraging you to drop off contributions to the American Red Cross anytime between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. during the week to the Round Room (directly behind Memorial Church). A basket will be available for you in the Round Room as well as blank envelopes to enclose your check or cash.

You may also send your contribution through I.D. mail to MC: 2090. The Office for Religious Life will deliver these donations to the local American Red Cross office in Palo Alto. Checks are preferred (cash will also be accepted) made payable to the "American Red Cross." More information about the ARC is on the website at http://www.redcross.org/.

Please know that you are always welcome to come by Memorial Church if you want a quiet place to sit for meditation and prayer. Associate Dean Joanne Sanders offers this prayer for comfort and strength during this difficult time. The prayer is from the Episcopal Relief and Development organization:

A Prayer for Rescue, Recovery, Rebuilding

O gracious God, we will never understand the sorrows of the world, but by your grace we will not turn away from them. Renew and sustain in us the spirit of love that crosses miles. Cheer and encourage those who labor to help the injured, the homeless, the hungry and those in despair. Bless and soften the hearts of those who would take advantage of tragedy for their own profit, that they may come to know where true joy is to be found. Unite us in prayer with all those who look for help, and use us to come speedily to them with the things that they need. We ask these things in your own most holy Name. AMEN.

NOTE: For those interested in supporting other fundraising activities, the student group, Stanford Students for Relief, will be initiating other fundraising activities once students return to campus. Watch for additional information, or contact Nanci Howe at nanhowe@stanford.edu for information.

Thank you for your care and support as a generous expression of our Stanford community.
