Karl Deisseroth
Arthur Kornberg
Karl Deisseroth, MD, PhD, assistant professor of bioengineering and psychiatry, has been named one of three academic physicians in the United States to receive a prestigious Charles E. Culpeper Scholarship in Medical Science. The award is given to carefully selected physicians of high potential achievement who are committed to careers in academic medicine. Deisseroth runs his research laboratory in the Department of Bioengineering, while also serving as an attending physician. His work focuses on activity-modulating interventional treatments of neuropsychiatric disease.
Arthur Kornberg, MD, the Emma Pfeiffer Merner Professor of Biochemistry, Emeritus, was recently named an honorary member of the Japan Academy for his research in molecular biology. The academy established the honorary membership in 1895 and may confer membership to non-Japanese individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of science and learning in Japan. Kornberg is the recipient of numerous prestigious honors and awards, including the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1959 for his laboratory synthesis of DNA.
Thomas Krummel, MD, the Emile Holman Professor and chair of the Department of Surgery, was elected director of the James IV Association of Surgeons. The association, which has between 75 and 90 active members worldwide, was named for King James IV of Scotland and was founded to foster communication and exchange between surgeons throughout the world. Krummel, who is also Susan B. Ford Surgeon-in-Chief at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, will serve a three-year term as an association member, running from 2004 to 2007.
