Alice S. Whittemore, PhD, professor of health research and policy, is the recipient of the third annual Janet L. Norwood Award for Outstanding Achievement by a Woman in the Statistical Sciences. She is a member of the Institute of Medicine and has served on the board of the scientific advisors of the U.S. National Cancer Institute, and is a past president of the International Biometric Society. She is also an associate editor on the editorial board of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention. At Stanford, she is co-chair of the Department of Health Research & Policy. Whittemore will receive the award Oct. 15 at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, where she will also present a lecture.

Steven Leibel,, MD, was appointed professor of radiation oncology as of Aug. 1. Leibel is also the first Ann and John Doerr Medical Director of the Stanford Cancer Center, where he oversees all cancer programs in patient care and clinical research. He plans to help build a program that will enable Stanford to become designated a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute. He came from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, where he served as chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology. He is a past president and chair of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, and is the current president of the American Board of Radiology.

Victor W. Hendersonwas appointed professor of health research and policy and of neurology and neurological sciences as of Sept. 1. He was professor of geriatrics and neurology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences; prior to that he was the Kenneth and Bette Volk Professor of Neurology at USC. His research interests include risk factors for cognitive aging and Alzheimer’s disease.
