Most university buildings will shut down during holiday break

More than three quarters of the 220 academic buildings on campus will have their utilities fully or partially shut down beginning at the end of the day Friday, Dec. 19, and will remain closed until Monday, Jan. 5, said Susan Kulakowski, campus energy manager. Administrators announced last summer that the university would close the week of Dec. 22-26, except where operations are essential, and department heads were strongly encouraged also to close the week of Dec. 29-Jan. 2. The shutdown is expected to save at least $250,000 in utility costs, Kulakowski said.

Faculty and staff with questions about scheduled closures should check with building managers, Kulakowski said. During the closing, building maintenance staff will be available at 723-2281.

Kulakowski encourages faculty, staff and students to maximize energy savings by shutting off computer monitors, copiers, printers and lights and making sure all windows are closed before leaving for the break.

Campus eateries will close and/or operate with shortened hours beginning next week. The Coffee House will close at 6 p.m. on Dec. 12 and 13 and will operate from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 15-19. The Coffee House will be closed Dec. 14 and Dec. 20-Jan. 4. The Treehouse will be closed Dec. 20-Jan. 1.
