Conference on medieval
Japanese Buddhism
The Center for Buddhist
Studies will host the first international Evans-Wentz
Conference from May 28 to 30 in Oak Room West of
Tresidder Union and at the Humanities Center Annex.
"Buddhist Priests,
Kings and Marginals: Medieval Japanese Buddhism"
will bring together 20 specialists in Indian, Chinese and
Japanese Buddhism, as well as scholars of Japanese
literature, institutional history and drama. Japanese
medieval Buddhism is a rapidly developing field, and five
specialists who have taken a prominent role in developing
an understanding of Japanese religion and culture are
among the invited speakers.
Stanford faculty who will
present papers include Bernard Faure, professor of
religious studies, and Tom Hare, and Susan Matisoff,
associate professors of Asian languages.
