Conference on medieval Japanese Buddhism

The Center for Buddhist Studies will host the first international Evans-Wentz Conference from May 28 to 30 in Oak Room West of Tresidder Union and at the Humanities Center Annex.

"Buddhist Priests, Kings and Marginals: Medieval Japanese Buddhism" will bring together 20 specialists in Indian, Chinese and Japanese Buddhism, as well as scholars of Japanese literature, institutional history and drama. Japanese medieval Buddhism is a rapidly developing field, and five specialists who have taken a prominent role in developing an understanding of Japanese religion and culture are among the invited speakers.

Stanford faculty who will present papers include Bernard Faure, professor of religious studies, and Tom Hare, and Susan Matisoff, associate professors of Asian languages.
