Spring Break receives Wyatt Award
The 1997 Stanford HIV/AIDS
in San Francisco Alternative Spring Break recently
received the Joe B. Wyatt Award for the curriculum-based
alternative spring break of the year. The award was
presented by Break Away, a national organization that
honors the achievement and dedication of students
involved in alternative break programs throughout the
country. The Stanford project was chosen for its
"consistent involvement with multiple community
organizations and the depth of the educational elements
of the curriculum-based alternative spring break."
The HIV/AIDS project in
San Francisco was one of several Alternative Spring Break
service-learning projects that gave Stanford students the
opportunity to experience the reality of social issues
through assigned reading, group discussion, personal
reflection and hands-on community service. This is the
second consecutive year that Stanford's Alternative
Spring Break program has been chosen for one of the Break
Away awards; last year it received the Program of the
Year Award. SR
