Director
Elaine Ray joined the News Service as a reporter in 1996. Since then she has served as editor of Stanford Report and was named director in 2001. Elaine first came to Stanford in 1995 as a John S. Knight journalism fellow. Prior to that, she worked as an editorial writer for the Boston Globe and also as an editor and writer for Essence magazine. A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Elaine earned her bachelor's degree from Chatham College and a master's degree in journalism from Kent State University. In 2004, Elaine was named a recipient of the Amy J. Blue award which honors outstanding staff.
Associate Director for Television and Radio
Jack Hubbard has been involved in print and broadcast journalism for more than four decades. He has been associate director at the Stanford News Service since 1992, and oversees news issues for broadcasters, including live television and radio feeds, coordinating live events and news conferences, and daily coverage of the university. He has worked for United Press International, CBS News, The Santa Barbara News Press , the Concord (New Hampshire) Daily Monitor, and several local television news operations around the country.
Associate Director for Print, Editor of Stanford Report
John Sanford is associate director for print at the News Service and editor of Stanford Report, a weekly newspaper that covers all aspects of the university but focuses on stories related to faculty and staff. Prior to becoming editor, he wrote about the humanities and arts for the paper. Before coming to the News Service he worked as a reporter for the Santa Cruz County Sentinel and the San Ramon Valley Herald. He holds a master's degree in journalism from the University of California-Berkeley and bachelor's degrees in French and English from the University of California-Davis.
University Governance Reporter
Kathleen J. Sullivan
covers university governance for the Stanford Report. Prior to joining the
Stanford News Service, Sullivan spent five years as a metro reporter for
the San Francisco Chronicle, and 10 years with the San
Francisco Examiner.
She received bachelor's degrees in English and political science from the
University of Oregon and a master's degree in journalism from Northwestern
University.

Dan Stober covers science for the Stanford Report,
with emphasis on physics, engineering and computer science. He was a reporter
and editor during a 20-year stint at the San Jose
Mercury News, covering
national security and science at the national laboratories in Los Alamos,
N.M., and Livermore. He is the co-author of A Convenient
Spy: Wen Ho Lee and the Politics of Nuclear Espionage. Earlier in his career he worked
at three newspapers in Florida, the Bradenton Herald, the Sarasota
Herald-Tribune and the High Springs Herald. He holds a bachelor's degree in journalism
from the University of Florida.

Bergeron covers biological sciences, chemistry and
earth sciences for Stanford Report. Before joining the News Service
he worked as a freelance science writer and editor, contributing
to print and online publications such as New
Scientist, ScienceNOW,
Exploratorium Magazine, PC World, SWARA and Stanford
Medicine.
He earned a bachelor's degree in geology from the University of
Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a master's degree in earth sciences
from the University of California-Santa Cruz.

Cynthia
Haven has written for The Washington Post, The
Los Angeles Times, The San Francisco Chronicle, The
Times Literary Supplement, and San Francisco
Magazine. Her work has also appeared in The
Kenyon Review, The Georgia Review, The
Cortland Review, Civilization, and others. Peter
Dale in Conversation with Cynthia Haven was published in London, 2005. Her Czeslaw
Milosz: Conversations was published in 2006; Joseph
Brodsky: Conversations in 2003. Prior to joining the News Service staff in 2007, she had been a regular contributor to Stanford
Magazine for many years. As news director of Stanford’s School of Education, she coauthored two books on education. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
Staff Affairs Reporter
Michael Peña covers staff and the university's non-academic departments. He previously worked as a reporter for the East Bay Business Times, and before that, as a writer for a business newsletter based in Novato. Michael has been a newspaper reporter since 1997, having worked for the Contra Costa Times and the San Francisco Chronicle. He grew up in the East Bay and earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from San Francisco State University.
Web Editor
Angela Freeman has been part of the web team for University Communications and the News Service since September 2002. She maintains the editorial content on several university websites, including the main University homepage, Stanford Report Online and Events at Stanford, and produces @Stanford, a monthly e-mail newsletter for Stanford alumni. Angela has worked as an editor and writer for both print and online publications since 1992, including Bon Appetit, PC World, and BabyCenter.com. She holds a bachelor's degree in Communications Studies from UCLA.
Photo Editor & University Photographer
Linda Cicero has for a decade covered many distinguished visitors, such as the Dalai Lama and President Bill Clinton, while creating a body of work that illuminates the daily lives of students, faculty and staff. Her photos appear regularly in Stanford Report and Stanford Magazine, and her work has been featured in numerous off-campus publications, including the New York Times and Newsweek . Cicero won the gold medal as Photographer of the Year for 2003 and a silver medal for 2002 from the Council for the Support and Advancement of Education. Cicero holds a BFA in photography from the California College of Art and a teaching credential from San Francisco State University.
Graphic Designer, web & print
Anna Cobb designs websites for the News Service and Office of University Communications. She also is responsible for the graphic design of Stanford Report and Stanford Report Online. She has designed the main University homepage, online events calendar and free downloadable web-templates available to the Stanford community. She has worked on the University's portal, e-mail and calendar, as well as the design for the Dickens Project. Anna holds a bachelor's degree in Industrial Arts with an emphasis in graphics. In addition to her half-time job at Stanford, she works as a designer for clients such as Williams Sonoma and Lucile Packard Foundation for Children's Health.
Copyeditor
Heidi Beck is a 20-year employee of the university. As a copyeditor she is the News Service's institutional memory. She reviews every Stanford Report story and press release for proper usage, accuracy and news style. In addition to her half-time job at the News Service, Heidi is a freelance copyeditor and proofreader. She holds an undergraduate degree from Boston University and a master's degree from Stanford.
Office Manager
Grace Evans has worked at News Service since 1990. After retiring in 1998, she returned to News Service in 2000 as office manager and typesetter. She has been employed at Stanford since 1967, including 22 years at Stanford Publication Services as a typesetter and four years at Stanford Research Institute (now SRI International) in Menlo Park.
Administrative Associate
Cynthia Lindsey has worked for the Stanford News Service since 1995. Her duties include triaging media calls; maintaining media lists and other office databases; serving as an assistant editor for events, housing and job ads, and as an assistant typesetter. Prior to the News Service, she worked for 24 years as a clinical medical assistant in a variety of departments at Stanford Medical Center.
Librarian
Michelle Futornick co-manages (with Regina Kammer) the department's photo and news archive. She handles inquiries from the Stanford community, outside media, and the general public and produces the daily Stanford News Digest. Before joining the Stanford News Service in 2002, she worked in the fields of Internet search, cultural heritage, and oral history. At EoExchange, she developed industry-specific Internet search sites. As a thesaurus editor at the Getty Information Institute, Michelle worked on vocabulary databases for the cataloging and online retrieval of art, architecture, and material culture. She was the archivist at the Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation, whose mission is to videotape and preserve the testimonies of Holocaust survivors and witnesses. Michelle holds a Bachelor's in History from Pomona College and a Master's in Library and Information Studies from UC Berkeley.
Librarian
Regina Kammer co-manages (with Michelle Futornick) the department's photo and news archive. She handles inquiries from the Stanford community, outside media, and the general public, and produces the daily Stanford News Digest. Prior to joining the Stanford News Service in 2005, Regina worked in the library field for 24 years including 15 years as a catalog and reference librarian in special, academic, and public libraries across the San Francisco Bay Area. She concurrently works for the WorldImages database (http://worldimages.sjsu.edu) at San Jose State University as an image cataloger. Regina holds a Bachelor's in Political Science/International Relations from UC Santa Barbara, a Master's in Library and Information Science from UC Berkeley, and a Master's in Art History from San Jose State University.
